I’ve been in a bit of a rut in the new year. It’s funny because it started off with a bang. I rang in the New Year in Sofia, then flew to Budapest for a wedding and to see a friend. Then I spent an extra week in my cast all the while falling further [...]

I think that grocery stores in Bulgaria kick of the holiday season with pomegranates and mandarin oranges. Well that and chocolate and various Christmas breads like German stollen and Italian panettone. Maybe I’ve made up the pomegranates and mandarin oranges thing but I think it’s magical to have pomegranates and mandarin oranges and out in the grocery store at the same time. [...]

After a day of Parent-Teacher Conferences, I didn’t feel like doing much. Teaching is hard work. Talking to parents about their students is a different kind of hard work. The worst part about the whole day was that there was no coffee to be found on campus–both Onda and the school cafe were closed. Who [...]

Any good road trip has snacks. On Sunday morning in Belogradchik when we were looking for coffee and something to eat for breakfast A. spotted these Bulgarian chocolates in a little neighborhood shop–Rodopa and another similar chocolate with white vanilla-like filling. I can’t remember the name of the other chocolate. Ops. So we bought chocolates, [...]

A couple of weeks ago, A. and I went to Art Kitchen a new Greek restaurant in Sofia. We liked it. I thought that A. read about the restaurant in Programata but when I look at Programata there doesn’t seem to be a review of the restaurant nor would one know that Art Kitchen serves Greek food as the [...]

After my Bulgarian lesson last week, A. picked me up and we went to check out a new restaurant he’d heard about called Alegre because they rumored to have Latin American food on the menu. On the way, I asked A. how he heard about Alegre. He told me: reading the internet. Oh. Thanks, internet, for [...]

I’ve walked by this shop a few times already on Vitosha. Why can’t they go ahead and open already?! It’s beginning to feel like they are taunting me. Last week there were some guys in the shop standing around looking out the window. I gave them a thumbs up. I meant it as encouragement. A, sort [...]

And it was delicious. A. brought over some homemade yogurt on Monday night. Tuesday morning I forgot that I had it until I grabbed my lunch out of the fridge. When I realized this I was really angry with myself. I love homemade yogurt. Don’t worry, this morning I ate yogurt. It was thick and [...]

This past weekend I was a busy cook. I made nachos on Friday night. Saturday morning I realized that I needed muffins to go with my coffee. On Sunday afternoon I made quinoa salad and on Sunday evening I made granola. I also did a lot of dishes this past weekend. Go figure. I’ve had [...]
