I have a hunch that many of you thought that I was never-ever going to make Musaka. Well, here’s the post for you. I finally made Musaka. Maybe not the traditional Bulgarian Musaka with ground beef (or another mix of minced meat) but with mushrooms and potatoes.
And the best news? It turned out great. Sure there’s maybe a couple of things that I would do differently but not many.
I made it with mushrooms, garlic and potatoes. Yogurt and eggs and little bit of sirene cheese for good measure.
First I bought and washed a ton of mushrooms. They were dirty so it’s a good thing I washed them carefully. Then I sauteed the mushrooms and added garlic. Four cloves. To that I added salt and pepper.
I chopped up the potatoes and then I cooked these on the stove with oil until they were soft. Then I mixed up the eggs and yogurt. Three eggs and 400 ml of yogurt. I covered the potato mushroom mix with the eggs and yogurt. I popped the whole thing in the oven and then 10 minutes later I decided to add some sirene cheese–which I did with out much problem. Then I baked the thing at about 200 degrees celsius or about 375 degrees F.
It came out great. Really great. Maybe I could have used a little bit more of the yogurt and egg mix to cover the potatoes. But I am happy to report that all’s well that ends well.
Give it a go. It’s super easy and it’s pretty clear to me that you can use nearly any vegetable that you want to as long as you keep the potato-ratio at one to one. This is hands down a dish that I’ll be making again and playing around with. Keep your eyes pealed for a spicy musaka in the future!!

A tip on washing/cleaning mushrooms – soak them in water and white flower, and rinse; helps rid of the dirt.
I’d sure miss the meat, but darn if that doesn’t look good! Well done
Come on,2 days no post!
Where are you?
Can’t wait for the new cook experience!
I just stumbled upon your blog, and it’s so interesting! I’m a Bulgarian living in Canada, and it’s so neat to read about your journey in Bulgaria.
Also, this musaka with mushrooms looks delicious! A job well done
